The valve cover is an extremely common oil leak area on VW / Audi engines. Extended exposure to extreme heat of the engine bay degrades gaskets and causes failure. A recommended replacement every 40k miles, or when oil leaking is visually present from valve cover or in the spark plug holes. Sometimes there may just be a burning oil smell coming from the engin bay, check the seal between the head and valve cover.
